The Sea

Before dreams (or terror) invented
mythologies and cosmogonies,
before time was parceled into days,
the sea, the eternal sea, was already here.
Who is the sea? Who is that violent
and ancient being that gnaws at the pillars
of the earth and is one and many seas
and abyss and brilliancy and chance and wind?
To gaze at it is to gaze for the first time,
always. With the wonder produced by
elemental things, the beautiful evenings,
the moon, the fire of a brazier.
Who is the sea, who am I? I shall know this
on the day that comes after agony.

—Jorge Luis Borges

A wave gathers itself, bunching its haunches like a cat about to pounce, and pauses, curls, curves, barrels, races to the shore, mane of foam flying…

Right now, we are at the pause.

Neptune, the god of the sea, is stationing. This means that from our perspective on earth, the great blue planet appears to be standing still in the sky. Since June 9, he has apparently been moving backwards; now he is about to turn forwards. All the outer planets have these very long periods of retrograde — about a third of the time. So one mustn’t over-egg the importance of an outer planet moving either forward or backward. However, the station is a special moment of tension and anticipation.

“The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamouring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace.”
― Kate Chopin, The Awakening

Neptune is stationing at 4°48 right now. If you have any planets within five degrees either side, then this change in direction is important. If you have planets at these degrees in a mutable sign (Sagittarius, Virgo or Gemini), then this is important too. If you have any planets in Scorpio or Cancer at these degrees, then you too should also take note. And all of us should pay attention to Pisces in our charts right now.

“The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite. ”
― Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea

Anyone with Sun, Moon or Ascendant at any degree of Pisces should be feeling this moment, even if your stuff is at the other end of the sign. Neptune is your ruler (along with Jupiter).

There’s tremendous power in a wave, and when that power is gathered as the wave turns, it is at its most focused and intense.

The wave turns and everything is swept before it. Everything is washed away — no value judgments, both the pirate treasure and the old fishing net.

How do you cope when a mighty wave bears down upon you?

You have two choices.

Either you ride it. You may already have your board, of course, but if you don’t you’ll just have to bodysurf. You know it is stronger than you are. Your timing must be just right, so you push yourself up and into the wave, and that immense power propels you forward. You ride high with your head in the sunshine.

Or you take a deep breath and dive under the wave. Again your timing has to be right, you gather your breath and your strength and you go down. It’s a roiling, murky, alien world, but… maybe just moments later up you pop in the calm waters between waves.

The most dangerous thing to do is fight it because you might find yourself sucked down and rolling around the ocean floor sucking in squids and jellyfish and saltwater, dashed against rocks.

“The waves broke and spread their waters swiftly over the shore. One after another they massed themselves and fell; the spray tossed itself back with the energy of their fall. The waves were steeped deep-blue save for a pattern of diamond-pointed light on their backs which rippled as the backs of great horses ripple with muscles as they move. The waves fell; withdrew and fell again, like the thud of a great beast stamping.”

Virginia Woolf — The Waves

Wow… that’s the degree of my Moon in Pisces.. and boy have I been feeling this —– I lack words —- inside of me. It’s also very close to my MC and on a certain level, all I can dream about is being free of the soulless job (I can see the Neptune yearning here). But fear the jump.
For someone who has drowned many times as a child, I find the image of riding the wave both beautiful and terrifying. Being brought down by the currents was so scary.
For me Neptune is so much about surrender and faith in the Universe, but it’s something I fear horribly. And yet, I know surrender is the only way I’ll be able to ride this wave.
    Thanks for posting this.

Despite writing about Neptune quite a lot, I don’t really think this energy can be expressed in words. It’s a great big feeling.

    Great big feeling indeed.

I’ve been feeling silent for a couple of weeks. Out of character 🙂

In Pisces: Lilith, Venus (my chart ruler), the tight Chiron/Saturn conj that … well, poisons my whole chart, and Pallas.

In 0-10 degrees: Mars (combust my Aries Sun), that Lilith, Ceres, and… Mercury.

My natal Neptune was retrograde; the Sun, Saturn and Venus are transiting it today; transiting Jupiter squared it. My natal Mercury was stationing direct. My Desc, my natal Neptune, and this Merc rx, all in Scorpio. It’s been a tough one.

I don’t feel like there’s much choice. This one’s about diving, here 🙂 Indeed, I feel almost buried by it.

Today it’s cold and snowing … the naked trees looking beautiful having it’s branches covered with the white pure blanket … there’s something very Piscean about it ; I too have my moon in 6 ‘ Pisces with rupee Neptune in 2’ Scorpio and ruler Jupiter in 21’ Libra . I always feel both the harmonic and delicate beauty as well as the fears of possibly losing power during storms … not always the case , but but an underlying one nonetheless which is reflective of Scorpio. Something spiritual going on as my daughter also has her moon in Pisces conjunct Jupiter in Pisces and she was born on my great grandmothers birthday ( my favorite relative ) who also has her moon and Jupiter in Pisces . Funny how my Neptune trines my own Pisces Moon in their sunsigns , ‘ Scorpio ‘ … weird isn’t it ? My daughters father is Aquarius with his Mars in Scorpio and our daughter is a Scorpio with her Mars in Aquarius! Funny the way certain signs seem to repeat themselves in a kind of pattern within families. ?
