Pluto squares Italy’s Neptune.

Some Italians will tell you that their country has essentially been run by a bunch of criminals since World War 2. Some astrologers might agree with that assessment.

The Italian natal chart shows the country’s charm (Libra rising, Gemini sun). Its passion (Moon in Scorpio) and its artistic genius (Jupiter and Neptune in Libra). This is a nation that produces beauty (Saturn-Venus). Textiles, fashion, shoes, ceramics, furniture – you name it, Italian design is still the best.

But it’s also a place where ideas about beauty and good manners are rigidly enforced (also Saturn-Venus in Cancer, which is a conservative sign). Try walking down the street in Milan in anything other than this year’s fashion appropriately adapted for your age and figure. The Italian concept of “bella figura” (good form) is a social straightjacket. This has its ups: no public drunkeness – and downs: oppressive conformity.

What’s interesting is that eccentric, wild, dynamic, delightful Sun-Uranus conjunction in Gemini. That’s where the endless inventiveness of Italy comes from. And also explains (somewhat) her love affair with the clownish Berlusconi.

The tension between the desire to break free and the rigid rules of decorum in Italy is extreme. Cancer, where Saturn and Venus are, follows Gemini, where Sun-Uranus dance. Signs that follow each other, contradict each other. So Cancer naturally rejects the frivolity, hilarity, anarchism of Gemini anyway. And with combination of planets the contrast is powerful.

Where is the tension defused? In art, cinema, literature, works of the imagination – the 12th house.

But with so much energy going into bella figura, who is actually running the place? The Midheaven (leaders) is closest to Saturn, the planet of rules and duty, but it is in fact moving away from Saturn and towards Pluto, the planet of criminality and subterfuge. Pluto is the lord of the underworld, quite literally.

What’s more that Pluto squares and rules the Scorpio Moon in the first house. The Moon is the people. Scorpio is again associated with the underworld, secrets, corruption.

Tearing down the scaffolding at the end of Fellini’s 81/2.
“Better to destroy than create something meaningless.”

Everyone in Italy is forced into illegality. Famously, the grey economy is bigger than the real one because no one pays taxes. This is a systemic failure. You’re a mug to pay taxes if no one else does. And you’re a mug to pay taxes if you believe the money goes into the hands of a bunch of thieves. This makes it very hard to reform (which Italian law-makers keep on trying to do) without a revolution. You need to tear the whole thing down and start again, including everyone in the process.

Everything is above the horizon in the Italian chart – except the Moon. Everything is perfectly obvious, in other words, only the people themselves turn a blind eye, perhaps because it is too ugly.

But what of the transits?

Saturn, the planet of comeuppance, is on the Italy’s ascendant and exactly squaring the country’s natal Saturn: a time of reckoning. First house Saturn transit usually heralds a time of austerity (no kidding) – and a time for playing by the rules.
I checked to see what was happening last time Italy had Saturn over the ascendant. Here is what I found for 1981 on the BBC website:

Italy in crisis as cabinet resigns
The Italian Prime Minister Arnaldo Forlani and his coalition cabinet have resigned following a scandal over membership of a Masonic lodge.
It follows a police raid on the Arezzo home of financier Lucio Gelli in March that uncovered a list of hundreds of members of the P2 (Propaganda Two) Masonic lodge.”

Silvio Berlusconi, the current Italian Prime Minister, was also a member of P2 at the time. This secret group was known as “a state within a state”. It’s members were implicated in the Vatican Bank scandal, which famously erupted when a man was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London. Some believe that the death of Pope John Paul I had something to do with P2.
But it’s not just Saturn that’s involved.
The North Node has just opposed Italy’s natal NN in Gemini, suggesting a change in the country’s direction. When the NN was in this spot before, Berlusconi came to power for the first time.
But this may be a long process for Italy – a complete re-invention that takes many years. I say this because Uranus, the planet of revolution, is going to oppose those charming idealistic, good mannered planets in Libra now and over the next seven years, culminating in an opposition to the Italian ascendant in 2016. The “servants” (6th house) will be biting the master’s backside. Then Uranus moves into the house of partners, who could turn out to be just as difficult to handle.
As we know, Pluto and Uranus are busy giving the world an upper cut and a sharp left hook right now, so clearly Uranus is not going to be working alone.

Pluto is going through the third house in Italy’s chart: unpleasant truths are going to be exposed. The shite is coming to the surface and every time it seems like it’s been flushed away, it’ll just come right back up.

Pluto has already opposed Mercury (communications) in the 9th house of justice and publishing. The third and the ninth houses rule the written and spoken word – all media and broadcasting. This is perhaps Italy’s deepest problem right now. Here’s how Vanity Fair magazine describes the situation.

“…Berlusconi, as prime minister, controls the three public television networks and, as the force behind the $8.6 billion conglomerate Fininvest, owns the three largest of the country’s four private networks, the largest publishing house, and around 40 magazines—not to mention dozens of other companies ranging from advertising to bookstores, to interactive media, to the soccer team A.C. Milan. He also owns film and TV production and distribution companies, insurance companies and mutual funds, banks, radio stations, and his own corporate university. Imagine a President Donald Trump with the media holdings of Rupert Murdoch…”

If you want to understand Berlusconismo,
watch this.

It’s about due for a bit of a Plutonian clear out then.

Pluto is at a hard angle to that idealistic Neptune right now, exposing the lies and corruption; shaking the country awake from it’s long sleep. But this is also a very disruptive aspect, churning up the mob.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens around 2018 when Pluto opposes Italy’s natal Venus and Saturn – that may prove to be the year of total transformation. I wonder if some Italy’s women might finally decide they’ve had enough of the men who run the country.

I’d like to mention the astrologer Frank Clifford, whose seminar I attended here in Oxford last Sunday. He shared some excellent, original ideas about the 12th and 1st houses. I’ve used them here and they seem to make perfect sense even though they go against received opinion.

economy, Europe, politics, Uranus-Pluto square

Just so brilliant once again Christina – (p.s been using the 12th/1st topsy turvy in personal charts and it works!)

I really think Frank’s on the button with the 12th house thingie. You can see how Italy’s Jupiter and Neptune are really over the horizon rather than hidden.

“Some Italians will tell you that their country has essentially been run by a bunch of criminals since World War 2.”
You are absolutely right… The great desease in Italy is the “bella figura”, an example is Berlusconi among others, but of course a man which is affecting the whole economic world system is something beyond the sustainable… So this ridiculous way of thinking is a very Catholic hypocrite “Let us maintain the appearences”, while backside them there is vice or criminality.
A double life, in other words…
“Some believe that the death of Pope John Paul I had something to do with P2.” Berlusconi – and it is not a “Some believe” but a fact – was part of P2 Masonic “deviated” Lodge! With the “black soul” of the whole story of Italian Republic: Licio Gelli… Licio Gelli was very near to the dictatorial right wing regimes in South America, especially Argentina and Uruguay, with which Italy has strong bonds.
“I say this because Uranus, the planet of revolution, is going to oppose those charming idealistic, good mannered planets in Libra now and over the next seven years, culminating in an opposition to the Italian ascendant in 2016.” This is the year that some Reports in some banks call to be the year of Italian default. Now it is too early, there is still too much owned by Italian state, especially as properties…
“Pluto is going through the third house in Italy’s chart: unpleasant truths are going to be exposed. “ Let’s hope it!!

In Italy there is a saying: “Papers are ok” in the sense of “documents” are ok. The rest does not mean… Appearences do mean reality not…

What he said was that he found planets in the 12th house were in fact very visible. But like newly-hatched chicks, so rather vulnerable. I’m not sure about the second bit but the first really makes sense.

Just think of all the politicians with their suns in the 12th. I think it’s more about the group-emotion Pisces thing than secrets.

Thank you for this long and interesting contribution Anon and Ever.

This post was partly prompted by your previous comment about the belief that politics is for the bad guys anyway.

Fellini does express that tension perfectly, does he not. What I want to be told (maybe by you) is what can I see, read, watch that gives a woman’s perspective on Italian society.

About the reactions against Berlusconi resignation – his supporters were far less than the opposers: One must understand that Italy has been under a sort of pressure… And for 17 long years!
Berlusconi uses and used to split: With me or against me…

And in the case of those public protests when Berlusconi was resigning again the criticism in Italy **did not** come at the point – the long pressure needed a release – but they focused on the **form**, again on it!

The **form** they had to express the satisfaction for the fact that Berluscon is no more President of the Government – Prime Minister – was wrong… In Italy many said this!

Instead Berlusconi – always, always – dresses impeccably, he is formally precise and so on… And this imrpessed teh majority of the Italians, not all, of course. But his capability of practically administer and rule a nation was and is a true disaster: As good to take the lead as to waste it when concretely governing! This is Berlusconi personality, double sided…

But Italisn, the majority but not all, were impressed on and by his commadn of the forms, both speaking, dressing, and by his use of propaganda!

Italian Formalism is truly the **damnation** of this nation…

In astrological terms, I see in this sort of public values dissociation a **classical** Scorpionic trait. And Berlusconi has Venus in Scorpio, and Italy has the Moon in Scorpio as a nation. On the other side, Italy has clear Libra dominance and this explains the absolute rule of the form which is excessively present…

Form is more important than true capacity in Italy, this is a mere fact…

The Scorpionic side of the Italians can explain things like mafia: A true mafioso goes to the church and has a family, can even be a sort of – appearigly – respectful man, but he can kill too…

Two faces, two sides, very very Italian!

Another case, interesting: Filippo Buonarroti, who was a nephew of the very most famous Michelangelo Buonarroti. But as Michelangelo was a great sculptor, painter and so on, his nephew was also great… In constructing occult societies!, with the aim of destroying states and beat governments, he was a sort of Public Danger Number One for many statesmen and governments of that age (XIX Century)

Filippo was a true revolutionary, he believed in a sort of what we may call today terrorism… Anarchism was the term of that age…

Now that the same family, that the same **milieu** gave birth to such a different outcome appears very meaningful to me, and can explain many things about Italy.

Of Italy many can see the **Libran** side but not the Scorpio side, that sometimes may appear dominant instead…

If we give a look at the so-called Second (Italian) Republic we may see Pluto in Scorpio in the Medium Coeli (Mc) and dominant…

Again, very meaningful…

To sum up: No matter how well you dress if you cannot rule a nation, if you cannot pay your debts! Formalism is not enough in order to face a **structural** problem…

And this is really very very **Libran** Saturn…

@anon and ever – excellent points about Scorpio-Libra energy. Sometimes having a beautiful veneer actually encourages hidden squalor.

Also the Scorpionic problem with public values – everything becomes relative but also very fixed.

I think we are lucky that Saturn is in Libra now, while Pluto-Uranus energy is so powerfully revolutionary. I wonder what will happen when Saturn goes into Scorpio…

Thank you Christina for your kind answers.

Yes I do agree, now Saturn is in Libra and it is good…

What can we expect when Saturn will be in Scorpio…

Consider that the Italian Second Republic was born under Pluto in Scorpio in Mc, following some astrologers, and Berlusconi has a **typical**, too typical Venus in Scorpio so we can expect two things, in my opinion: First, a sort of return, like the 100 days of Napoleon, that brought him to final defeat; Second effect: Due to the fact that we deal with Saturn (restrictions) we can even think to a final end… But in this case in a goo way…

And so we can expect even the end of the Italian – horribly scorpionic, prostitutely debauché even without Pluto in Scorpio… ! – Second Republic…
And it will not be a bas end…

It is clear Mr. Monti government – that we may like it or not! – to be Italian last chance, no doubt on it…

Returning to the point: Tv as usual depicts wrongly, they made see the followers of Berlusconi as many as the portesters against him, while it was very very different! Supporters were not that many, in fact thay made them see only near Berlusconi for if they had made see the whole road it would have been clear the supporters were not many…
On the contrary the protesters were far many more…
And raged! The whole roads around were full! People making a party, champagne bottles opened…

Anyway I do agree, the potential, the **explosive** potential of the astral forces in action in years that will come is an enormous force…

Let us hope – for the welfare of this unlcky country called Italy – that Saturn will act as a **limit**, a limiti to that explosive potential so that this **inevitable** passage though being hard will not be as hard as it is its highly explosive, very explosive potential…

Berlusconi’s British lawyer is — with an assist from a London judge — declared guilty:
http://jurist.org/paperchase/2009/02/italy-court-sentences-former-berlusconi.php

My British solicitor brother, combined with this article & your comment about P2 busting open when a corpse was found in London, make me wonder if there’s a special relationship in the law between these two countries.

I’m told that many international deals are placed under British jurisdiction because the case law there makes things more predictable. (France’s Napoleonic law, for instance, is a bit of a nightmare to work with, because contradictory rulings can be made by different judges.)

Just wondering if, within the context of being Europe’s legal catchall, Britain’s legal self nevertheless has a special relationship with Italy, or if my point of view is just skewed that way.
